Adolescence is often a challenging time when young people begin to decide what type of person they want to be. At this time they begin develop a sense of word view, discover their likes, dislikes, passions and discover their identity as they are given more and more freedom and responsibility.
There are so many factors that influence young people whilst making these decisions and they often feel confused with a range of existential dilemmas that often conflict. These conflicts often centre around who their parents want them to be, what is cool among peers or what their teachers, sports coaches, expect of them. What they should be doing, who they should be, versus who they truly want to be doing or who they truly want to be.
This is an especially risky period for the rise mental health issues, due to vastly changing environment issues, genetic factors and for some experimentation with drugs and alcohol. All at a time when the brain is going through a delicate growth period.
Although genetic factors are difficult to distinguish, environmental and behavioural factors can be addressed early through life coaching and personal development training.
Coaching is usually well received by young people. They enjoy learning more about themselves as unique and worthy individuals. For parents who feel their young adult could do with to get some extra support, coaching is an option without the stigma associated with seeing a counsellor or psychologist.
Jakob’s approach will assist young people to learn about themselves and why they are unique, develop a clearer sense of self, increase self confidence, be aware of thoughts/feelings that may trigger behaviours, learn to relax and improve concentration.

Conversation – Support young adults to talk freely about their lives, what is challenging them, how they are feeling, what is good in their lives and what they want from our time together. To give them a space to safely speak their minds, make sense of difficult situations and have a say in their learning.
Mindfulness – Support young adults to improve their ability to handle challenging thoughts and feelings, lower stress and anxiety levels and improve concentration and focus.
Values– Support young adults to clarify their personal values and how they can use these to choose appropriate behaviour and plans of action that create a life where they will flourish.
Strengths – Support young adults to discover their innate personal strengths and use this new insight to develop a stronger sense of self, and begin thinking about possible career paths that draw on their unique character strengths.
Goals – Support young adults to set goals, devise action plans and celebrate their success.
Jakob has worked with adolescents and young adults in both a one on one and group environment. He is a degree qualified and internationally accredited coach, adheres to the ethics of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and holds a current working with children check. Jakob is also an accredited youth mental health first aider.
The scope of coaching is limited and although Jakob is trained to support young people experiencing mental health issues, a referral to appropriate services including GP, psychiatrist, specialised services etc. may be advised. Jakob is happy to support families and young adults in discussing relevant services and making appropriate referrals.
